Brathwaite's 8000-mile trip pays off as Windies beat England

West Indies defied inclement conditions to defeat England by 21 runs in the one-off T20 worldwide at Chester-le-Street.

The club statement said: "During the course of the second innings between England v West Indies at Emirates Riverside, three spectators were injured when a small section of the North-East Terrace flooring became unstable causing them to fall".

What they saidWest Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite on the conditions : "I had a chat with a few of the boys in a huddle while Chadwick (Walton) was getting treatment and majority said it was unsafe".

The North East Ambulance Service responded to a 999 call and took the woman to Newcastle's RVI Hospital, where she was admitted and kept overnight.

"Conditions were soft and slippery, the umpires were close to calling it off actually".

Chris Gayle (40) and Evin Lewis (51) - a well-known tormentor and his heir apparent - scored 91 boundary-laden runs between them in just 49 deliveries to set the foundation for a winning score of 176 for nine. The umpires were in agreement with us but then we thought we will give it a go and see if there are any slips, and there wasn't.

After the Caribbean was left devastated by Hurricane Irma last week , there was worry that Jose could do further damage. The hurricane does not now pose a threat to land and forecasters expect few changes in its intensity.

"Losing the game was losing three wickets in that period", said Morgan.

But Yorkshire's Plunkett, who is in the England squad for the match, feels the time may be right to rest Stokes.

Brathwaite snared 3-20 from 3.3 overs, Williams took 3-35 from his allotted four overs and Narine, later named Player-of-the-Match, grabbed 2-15 from his four overs, as England were dismissed for 155 in pursuit of a victory target of 177 in the weather-affected match at the Riverside Stadium.

The latest perceived slight for the one-off evening Twenty20 match to be played against West Indies on Saturday night - temperatures are expected to peak at 13C at around 6.30pm and decline steadily from there - is the omission of the local hero, Ben Stokes.

Gayle's 21-ball innings, featuring three fours and four sixes ended when, after guiding Plunkett to backward point, he was run out as he ambled for a single.
