Nasa's Cassini crashes into Saturn to end 13-year-long historic mission

Nasa's Cassini crashes into Saturn to end 13-year-long historic mission

Cassini was put on a course to plunge through Saturn's atmosphere and vaporise like a meteor at the end of its 20-year journey exploring the planet.

During that time it has sent back some incredible images to Nasa and the European Space Agency, including detailed images of Saturn, its rings and its moons. To give you an idea of how little we knew before this mission, ESA built Cassini's lander Huygens to act as a boat, in case Titan's surface was covered in oceans.

As expected, Cassini entered Saturn's atmosphere with its thrusters firing to maintain stability, as it sent back a unique final set of science observations, NASA said. But it wasn't until 2004 - so seven years later - that the spacecraft actually fell into Saturn's orbit, according to The Washington Post.

What's next: Jim Green, the director of planetary science at NASA, is one of several scientists who want to return to Saturn, the LA Times reported.

Space research station "Cassini" (Cassini) on Friday, September 15, has completed his mission and burn in the clouds of Saturn.

Due to the travel time for radio signals from Saturn, which changes as both Earth and the ringed planet travel around the Sun, events now take place there 83 minutes before they are observed on Earth.

The project manager monitoring Cassini's signal at Jet Propulsion Laboratory said that with the loss of Cassini's signal, just before 5 a.m., the spacecraft would be gone within seconds.

The potential for life on those two moons sealed Cassini's fate, with NASA deciding to purposefully use up the last of the spacecraft's fuel to destroy it in Saturn's atmosphere in an effort to prevent inadvertent contamination of the ocean worlds.

The Cassini probe's mission is about to come to and end, as scientists prepare to crash it into Saturn. Project officials invited ground telescopes to look for Cassini's last-gasp flash, but weren't hopeful it would be spotted from a billion miles away. NASA now believes the circled area in the image below is where the spacecraft finally became part of the planet it studied for so long. Cassini remained in orbit around Saturn, the only spacecraft to ever circle the planet.

The 22 by 13 foot (6.7 by 4 meter) spacecraft is also credited with discovering icy geysers erupting from Enceladus, and eerie hydrocarbon lakes made of ethane and methane on Saturn's largest moon, Titan.

"Already, Saturn is beckoning us to go back", Green said.
