North Korea may launch ballistic missile on Saturday, says Seoul PM

Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed on seeking the touched United Nations sanctions after the rogue state conducted its sixth nuclear test on Sunday, which they claimed was a thermonuclear weapon capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

The president spent most of the day discussing responses of the worldwide community to North Korea's sixth nuclear test with world leaders, including Merkel, US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

In his bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin held Wednesday, Moon proposed pushing for a new UN Security Council resolution that would cut off all oil supplies to the North.

South Korea braced for a possible further missile test by North Korea as it marked its founding anniversary on Saturday, just days after its sixth and largest nuclear test rattled global financial markets and further escalated tensions in the region.

Mr Moon had called for Moscow to support stronger sanctions against Pyongyang, which conducted its sixth nuclear test on Sunday in what it claimed was a detonation of a thermonuclear weapon built for intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. He said there are "many reasonable people in the current administration" who are experienced and who have dealt with similar crises.

"It's impossible to scare them", Putin said of North Korea.

"One should not give in to emotions and drive North Korea into a corner", said Putin after a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Eastern Economic Forum.

But Putin claimed Russian Federation exports only around 40,000 tons of crude oil to North Korea annually and rejected sided with China in refusing to cut crude oil supplies to paralyze North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs. Abe is due to meet Putin separately later today. The two countries have been at loggerheads over South Korea's decision to deploy a US anti-missile system, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, which has a powerful radar that can probe deep into China.

US officials have said the system is purely defensive and meant as a counter only to North Korea, not China. The U.S. and South Korea should "immediately stop the deployment process and withdraw relevant equipment", Geng said.

Six police officers and 32 other people were injured, none seriously, in the clashes, said a fire department official in Seongju.

The THAAD is thought to be the world's most advanced interceptor.

The rollout was "temporarily" completed on Thursday, a spokesman for South Korea's defence ministry said, adding it was necessary to counter increased threats from North Korea.

Washington and Seoul began deploying THAAD before a conservative South Korean government was ousted in March in a corruption scandal.

Moon took office in May calling for a diplomatic focus, but the torrid pace of North Korea's weapons tests had hardened his government's stance.

Seoul also warned that North Korea may launch a new missile as soon as this weekend.

"We are also opposed to and condemn the North Korean nuclear development", Yoon Young-chan, senior presidential secretary for public relations for the Blue House, quoted the Russian President as having said.

They have raised worries over rumored health hazards linked to the system's powerful radar and the possibility that the town will become a target of North Korean attacks.
