Mattis Warns Of 'Overwhelming' Military Response To North Korea

The unexpectedly powerful test Sunday was said to exceed in magnitude the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan - the resultant shock caused momentary panic in parts of China - and Mr Trump slammed it as "very hostile and unsafe to the United States".

The president apparently sought to put the onus for the failure to dissuade the North on South Korea and China. "North Korea is a rogue nation which has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success", Trump tweeted.

When asked earlier today if he would consider attacking North Korea, Trump said: 'We'll see'.

In short, the hydrogen bomb is a completely different and altogether more frightening prospect and it would put North Korea into an exclusive club of only five other countries: the US, UK, China, France and Russian Federation.

After Pyongyang tested a nuclear weapon Sunday, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the US has "many military options" on North Korea and threatened Pyongyang with "a massive military response" if a US territory or US allies are targeted.

Trump is also weighing whether to pull out of a free trade deal with South Korea, which Klobuchar says would be a mistake at this juncture.

Mattis spoke at the White House after meeting with Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and other members of Trump's national security team.

Theresa May, British prime minister, said: "I discussed the serious and grave threat these risky and illegal actions present with President Abe in Japan this week and reiterate the call we jointly made for tougher action, including increasing the pace of implementation of existing sanctions and looking urgently in the UN Security Council at new measures".

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Fox News Sunday he was working on a new sanctions package.

North Korea may have conducted sixth nuclear test

The latest test appeared to mark a significant step forward in North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's quest for a nuclear missile capable of striking anywhere in the United States.

Such a move would have serious ramifications, resulting in a halt to U.S. trade with China, who remains its key economic partner.

North Korea in a special broadcast at 1500 Pyongyang time confirmed Sunday's test as having been of a hydrogen bomb created to be used on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

China's Foreign Ministry said it would work with the global community to implement United Nations sanctions.

The U.N. Security Council announced that it will have a meeting about the nuclear test tomorrow morning. On August 29, North Korea fired a ballistic missile which flew over Japan before breaking apart and falling into the ocean.

President Trump confirmed the nuclear test.

. But he summed up North Korea's rapid progress with a dire warning.

The test drew condemnation from both South Korea and China.

Image distributed on Sunday allegedly shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspecting the loading of a hydrogen bomb into an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Sunday's test was the sixth to be carried out by North Korea and the country's state-controlled media said it was a thermonuclear device.
