Nitish Kumar's JD(U) eyes two berths in PM Modi's cabinet reshuffle

Nitish Kumar's JD(U) eyes two berths in PM Modi's cabinet reshuffle

Putting an end to days of speculation, officials Friday confirmed that the reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers has been scheduled for Sunday morning.

The strength of Manmohan Singh's UPA government stood at 78 after its last Cabinet reshuffle in October 2012. The environment ministry was reassigned to Harsh Vardhan as an additional charge after the death of minister Anil Dave.

There is also a buzz that Modi might even carve a mammoth transport and mobility portfolio- which could include road and surface transport, shipping as well as railways-and install Gadkari as its minister.

The reshuffle has been expected for some time.

Suresh Prabhu, whose railways ministry has been blighted by train accidents - mainly derailments - and reports of poor quality and service, may be shifted to another department, sources say.

Small and medium enterprises minister Kalraj Mishra, water resources and Ganga rejuvenation minister Uma Bharti, skill development minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy, minister of state for human resource development Mahendra Nath Pandey and minister of state for water resources Sanjiv Baliyan have quit the government. Besides, Uttar Pradesh is far too important a state electorally for the state party chief to juggle responsibilities.

Act came into force which provides that the size of the council of ministers in the union government and in a state government can not be more than 15 per cent of the total number of members of the Lower House of the Parliament or State Legislature respectively. Finance minister Arun Jaitley has been holding additional charge of the defence ministry since then. At least two members of the JD (U) are also likely to join.

Former Mumbai police commissioner and Baghpat MP Satya Pal Singh, may be brought as a Union minister.

Lok Sabha deputy speaker Thambidurai is likely to be inducted as a cabinet minister if AIADMK decides to join NDA.

If sources are to be believed, the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) carried out a detailed audit of performance of Cabinet ministers.

Meanwhile, the three-day coordination meeting of the Sangh Parivar began today with top leaders of the saffron combine including RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and BJP president Amit Shah in attendance.
