Milwaukee's Sheriff David Clarke has resigned

David Clarke, the controversial high-profile sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, and a favorite of President Donald Trump, abruptly resigned on Thursday. Previously, he suggested that he was being considered for a post at Trump's Department of Homeland Security - but that ended up unconfirmed.

A message seeking comment from the Sheriff's office was not returned.

In an email to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Clarke said that "only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism".

Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said Thursday that he received a resignation letter from Clarke. He announced in May that he was under consideration for the job, but he pulled his name from consideration the next month.

There's no word yet on why the sheriff chose today to tender his resignation or what his next moves may be.

Conservative Firebrand David Clarke Resigns as Milwaukee Sheriff

Clarke's departure re-opens the prospect, widely rumored in the spring, of the authoritarian-minded right-wing lawman joining President Donald Trump's cabinet. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, but he repeatedly rejected their overtures. Clarke became a go-to talking head for Fox News and other conservative outlets as the tide of protest against police violence crested nationwide in recent years.

He was later accused of plagiarism in his master's thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School. Clarke spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Clarke however turned down the role at the time. He also argued that Black Lives Matter has encouraged attacks on police (it never has), and that it's an "insidious terror organization".

Outspoken conservative Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has resigned.
