Pets Alive rescues dogs in the path of Hurricane Harvey

Pets Alive rescues dogs in the path of Hurricane Harvey

The animals will arrive Tuesday morning to Morristown Municipal Airport before heading over to St. Hubert's in Madison, where they will be fed and cared for before being distributed to one of 15 sister shelters in the area, Debra Miller said.

Predicting how any animal will behave in a crisis is impossible, she adds, but pets usually do one of four things: Escape; hide far away from people; seek reassurance from their owners; or-in rarer cases-become aggressive, even toward those who may be trying to help. "We only have a certain capacity as well, so we are coordinating these efforts, where we're pulling animals in from these disaster zones, but also working with shelters to keep moving them [animals] up in order to have space where they're needed most", Hill said.

Wings of Rescue, a nonprofit, is expected to fly about 40 stray animals from Texas to the Oregon Humane Society, possibly as soon as Wednesday night.

If people who self deploy come, and get stranded, emergency response attention must then add them to the long list of rescue, and divert attention away from the existing priority rescue work.

On Friday, the Roman Forest Police Department in Texas turned to Facebook to plead with owners not to leave their pets tied outside with flooding likely.

"Animals were supposed to be coming to us from Louisiana but they ended up going somewhere closer", said Sharon Harvey, Cleveland Animal Protective League President and CEO. Almost 200 dogs and cats were taken in by San Antonio's Animal Care Services, including 30 dogs from a flooded shelter in Pleasanton. Many Good Samaritans are reminding people that they especially on the lookout for animals as they go house to house in small boats, looking for individuals in crisis. The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services and the SPCA of Texas are both taking donations through wish lists on Amazon for food, crates and bedding. According to news reports, almost half the people who needed rescue from Katrina refused to leave without their pets, while first responders would not even take service animals.

Human society officials say they are sending a team, and medical supplies, to help animals in areas affected by the hurricane. Volunteers are working to give pet owners what they need.
