Merkel has no regrets over refugee policy despite political cost

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended her controversial decision to admit over a million refugees in 2015, and insisted she had no regrets, saying she would take the big decisions 'the same way again, '" British newspaper Daily Express wrote.

Schulz launched his attack in an interview with ARD, a German broadcaster, on Sunday (27 August), ahead of the elections on 24 September.

Over a million refugees and asylum seekers crossed into Germany in 2015 and majority stayed in the country.

"This is a very complicated phase of our relationship" with Turkey, Merkel said.

'Those kinds of extraordinary situations happen every once in a while in a country's history.

"In spite of that, it is necessary to continue negotiations on the possibility of a [political] transition that would facilitate reconciliation", Merkel stated.

"Yes in principle", the chancellor said Sunday when asked about a demand by her main opponent, Social Democratic leader Martin Schulz to allow auto owners to collate complaints against carmakers.

The updated travel warning , which was released August 22, replaces an earlier travel warning issued December 8, 2016. In Baja California Sur , which includes Los Cabos , the homicide rate has been on the rise since a year ago .

"I could also imagine a (combined) economy and finance minister", she said, adding that this could allow for better coordination on budget and economic policies.

As she battles for re-election, Mrs Merkel has been subjected to ridicule and protest over her laissez-faire stance on migration. "Politicians need to set the framework based on realistic goals - then, competition will lead to the best solutions".

The chancellor, a Christian Democrat, said she did not think a so-called "Red-Red-Green" coalition of the Social Democrats with the Left and the pro-environment Greens would help advance Germany. This centre would be in Egypt, a transit country for migrants striving to reach Europe.

On the future of the EU, the German leader said she backed plans to turn the European Stability Mechanism crisis fund into a full-blown European Monetary Fund. Mr Schulz, who doesn't have a position in Ms Merkel's administration, has said it's the government's job to avoid driving bans.

He homed in on a report in news magazine Der Spiegel at the weekend which claimed that Merkel was using police and army helicopters on the campaign trail but that her party was only paying a fraction of market rates.

"I'm happy to say those two words out loud", she said.
