Musk congratulated WARR in a tweet on Sunday, adding in a subsequent tweet that it may be possible to reach "supersonic" speeds in the test Hyperloop tube.

The feat occurred during a contest sponsored by Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp.to build a futuristic mode of transportation known as the hyperloop.

Weighing only 176 pounds, the team pointed to its 50kW electric motor as a crucial cause of their success."By using an electric motor and therefore being independent from the SpaceX accelerator vehicle used by most competitors to gain speed", WARR says in a press release, "the team gave themselves an advantage over the other teams". He claims the Hyperloop system could whisk people from San Francisco to Los Angeles, or from Munich to Berlin, in about 30 minutes. The Hyperloop One and the Hyperloop Transportation Technologies are engaged in the project realization.

But Musk's SpaceX campus in Hawthorne will be the focus of the Hyperloop world Sunday as it hosts the Hyperloop Pod Competition.

The pod is a prototype, as SpaceX's test tube is a mere 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter.

In layman's terms: The fastest pod wins.

The WARR Hyperloop pod was a complete redesign of the team's first winning structure, the student engineers wrote on their website.

Pods that pass those initial steps will be able to compete inside the 1.25-kilometer test track today.

Among the two dozen teams of students competing were squads from UC Irvine, Cal State Sacramento, UC Santa Barbara, two teams from the University of Texas at Austin, and teams from India, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland and Japan.
