West Nile virus found in Warren County community

The resident of the 75248 zip code [north of Beltline Road, between the Dallas North Tollway and Coit Road] was diagnosed with West Nile virus on July 14.

A study released by Brock University Tuesday predicts a West Nile epidemic in Ontario is just weeks away. As is protocol, Vector Control District technicians set up mosquito traps within a 1-mile radius of any dead, West Nile virus-positive bird.

"We have the potential to see that here", said Lori Lucas, a supervisor with the Lambton health unit.

He said 80 per cent of people infected don't show symptoms at all.

"It's common for us to find mosquitoes infected with West Nile in Louisville around this time each year", said Public Health and Wellness director Dr. Sarah Moyer, in a statement.

The 2002 outbreak saw about 300 human cases, and the second epidemic year in 2012 saw about 250, according to Giordano.

"We're ramping up to be somewhere in between 2002 and 2012 (this year)", he said.

"I think we're kind of seeing a little bit of hangover there from Benson and Amalga testing positive, so I think it makes sense that we tested positive on the northwest side", Davis said.

"It really depends on what are numbers are going to be like next week", he said.

Health officials provided these tips for keeping mosquitoes at bay. Last week in Hamilton, 15 batches of mosquitoes from 10 traps tested positive.

A Monterey County resident contracted the virus in September 2016, but officials believe the exposure may have taken place in the Central Valley.

Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and socks when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk to reduce the amount of exposed skin, as weather permits.

Residents are also urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing loose, long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when outdoors and defend against mosquito bites by wearing mosquito repellent.
