President Trump Pushes Yet Another Problematic Immigration Bill

On Wednesday afternoon, President Trump unveiled the RAISE Act, an immigration bill aimed at reducing legal immigration overall, and give priority to English-speaking applicants.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced support for new legislation that would seek to curtail legal immigration to the United States by imposing a skills-based system that would prioritize immigrants based on current work-force needs. It would alter the immigration screening process to favor English speakers with the purported ability to support themselves financially and demonstrate skills that will benefit the economy, and would also, according to the president, prohibit recently arrived green-card holders from receiving welfare.

Mr. Trump said the US has for decades issued green cards to "record numbers of low-wage immigrants", and said it puts pressure on unskilled workers who are USA citizens already. The bill would only allow for spouses and young children to emigrate to the US and join their green card-holding sponsor. Cotton said of the current system. "Returning to our historically normal levels of legal immigration will help improve the quality of American jobs and wages".

"Within just a few years immigration as a share of national population is set to break all historical records", he said at the time, arguing that immigration levels should be kept within "historical norms" as a share of population and that immigrants should be selected based on their likelihood of success in the USA society, based on merit, skill and proficiency.

The bill aims to end the diversity visa lottery, which allows 50,000 people from underrepresented countries to obtain green cards.

"Their bill would do three things: First, limit the number of foreign nationals who are able to get green cards to reunite with their families already in the USA - now the largest category of legal immigrants; second, cut the number of refugees in half; third, eliminate the diversity visa lottery - a program that gives visas to countries with low rates of immigration to the United States". That bill's headed straight down the toilet in the Senate, needless to say; the Democratic Party has sound electoral reasons to prefer poorer immigrants.

Dang MLA Mangal Gavit and Ishwarbhai Patel, another Congress legislator present at the press meet, made similar allegations. It was alleged that Scheduled Tribe Congress MLA Punabhai Gamit, a three-time legislator, was being threatened and lured.

It also sets a 50,000 annual cap on refugees, instead of a level mandated by the president.

Critics of the bill also attacked its revisions to family-based immigration, arguing that such measures will dissuade skilled immigrants who would otherwise want to come to the US.

Framing the bill as a means to cut legal immigration rather than merely replace lower-skilled immigrants with higher-skilled ones will make Schumer's job easier. The initial immigration reform bill in February was opposed by some Republicans and business groups.

Senator David Perdue said that the proposal was partially formulated based on immigration policies in Canada and Australia.

"Restricting family members from joining their families in the United States will make it harder for them to become fully American", the National Immigration Forum's executive director Ali Noorani said in a statement.

"Instead of today's low-skill system - just a awful system where anybody comes in, people that have never worked, people that are criminals, anybody comes in - we want a merit-based system, one that protects workers, our workers, our taxpayers, and one that protects our economy", Trump said. "This is different than illegal immigration".
