US Doctor's Examination Could Determine Charlie Gard's Fate

US Doctor's Examination Could Determine Charlie Gard's Fate

Both Pope Francis and U.S. President Donald Trump have weighed in, expressing their support earlier this month for granting Gard treatment.

"Parents are the number one doctors, we know our son, and we knew he was getting stronger".

Mr Justice Francis, the High Court judge who has been hearing appeals by Chariie's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard for him to be offered an experimental therapy by a USA doctor, has to be informed of any plans to move him from GOSH. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, and Trent Franks, R-Ariz.

They say life support treatment should stop.

It's not yet clear how the bill would affect Gard in practice. Art Jr. was the first child in the U.S.to get the treatment five years ago. Instead, the sponsors said, making him a permanent resident would ease the process of getting him across the Atlantic.

He said he hoped a high dose of nucleosides, which are found naturally in the body, would enter Charlie's cells, affect the mitochondria and prove "therapeutic". Since the media coverage of the case, other parents - of children that have had the nucleoside therapy Yates and Gard have been requesting - have begun speaking out. It started at 7.30am and lasted until 1pm.

Grassley may subpoena former Trump campaign chairman
Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the committee's Republican chairman, said if Manafort does not come willingly he will be subpoenaed. Susan Collins, R-Me., calling for the Senate intelligence committee to interview him.

However, the judge allowed Charlie's mother to attend the meeting after her lawyer argued she had carried out extensive research into her son's condition and was informed enough to contribute and listen to doctors' perspectives.

"Being able to hear the heartbeat ... we had this gut feeling of there has to be something - I mean, a doctor may say it, but she's moving". "It is absurd that the science of this case is being infected by the inability to measure a child's skull", Francis said at the hearing.

Hirano, along with the rest of the team of medical experts examining Gard, will present findings on how much Gard could be helped by treatment to the U.K. High Court after the two-day examination.

Hirano has treated other children suffering from the same extremely rare condition that Charlie has, and he has stated he thinks there's a 10 percent chance that Charlie's condition could improve.

Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome is a progressive disease that causes muscle weakness and loss of motor skills, leaving those who have it unable to stand, walk, eat, talk and eventually breathe. Justice Francis, presiding over Gard's new trial, subsequently invited Hirano to the U.K.to examine Gard as part of an global team of medical experts. Hirano had not previously examined Gard in person until this week.

The hospital gave Hirano an honorary contract, which gives him the same status as its own physicians. Hirano and a second unidentified medical colleague reportedly spent five hours trying to convince GOSH doctors of the potential of nucleoside therapy for Gard, although his precise findings have not been yet reported, and further hearings in the United Kingdom are expected this week.
