China's Shanshan Feng shrugged off the effects of jet lag to fire a six-under-par 66 for the clubhouse lead in the weather-disrupted opening round of the US Women's Open at Trump National Thursday.

"If the President of the United States decides to attend the US Women's Open Championship, we welcome him", the governing body said in a statement. "Will be heading to New Jersey and attending the USWomensOpen their most important tournament, this afternoon", Trump tweeted after departing Bastille Day celebrations in France.

Acknowledging the crowds, the president waved, pointed and gave a thumbs-up, prompting squeals from a group of schoolgirls.

UltraViolet, a national women's advocacy organization, announced plans on Wednesday to protest the Open. Things may potentially change though as the president will be attending the event this weekend.

The second-round leaderboard was anything but "America First", however, with the top nine all internationals players on the rain-soaked course. Lightning delayed play for 2 hours, 5 minutes late in the afternoon and 30 players were still on the course when the horn sounded to stop play for the day at 8:33 p.m. Play was scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. Friday.

And so it went, as Trump stole the show from the players, much to the delight of the spectators who shouted encouragement to their president.

She now sits five shots behind Feng.
