Trump Presses Xi on 'Growing Threat' of North Korea

Trump Presses Xi on 'Growing Threat' of North Korea

"Xi Jinping emphasized that, since my meeting with the president at Mar-a-Lago, China-US relations have achieved important outcomes", state broadcaster CCTV reported, referring to Mr Xi's meeting with the American leader in Florida in April.

Mr Trump called Mr Xi and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe separately on Sunday night, with the phone calls focused on the threat North Korea's nuclear ambitions pose to regional peace.

In addition, the U.S. Navy on Sunday sent the guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem close to Triton Island in the South China Sea, which is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam.

Trump attacked China for ramping up trade with North Korea in a Wednesday tweet, saying that "trade between China and North Korea grew nearly 40% in the first quarter".

China's ambassador to the United Nations warned that "the consequences would be disastrous" if the USA and North Korea failed to resume talks.

In the joint press interaction with Mr Modi, Mr Trump thanked the Indian people "for joining (the US) in applying new sanctions against the North Korean regime".

North Korea's isolation, which is far greater than Iran's was, could make it even more susceptible to such pressure. The U.S. also has pursued companies outside North Korea accused of surreptitiously helping the communist country, such as a small Chinese bank the U.S. penalized last week for allegedly laundering money for North Korea.

Another Sino-US expert, Professor Shen Dingli of Fudan University, said that this "good cop, bad cop routine" was part of Mr Trump's negotiating tactics to get China to do more to rein in North Korea, but that Beijing was unlikely to bite.

President Trump, according to the New York Times, is frustrated by Chinese leader Xi Jinping's failure to lean on North Korea over its missile launches. Under that policy, which has been in place since 1972, the United States recognised a single Chinese government in Beijing and severed its diplomatic ties with Taiwan. "We can not afford to wait for too long before dialogue" Liu Jieyi told reporters Monday in NY.

Relations between the two nations had been warmer since Trump and Xi met in April, but Washington has taken a series of actions that have infuriated Beijing in recent days.

Yet his comments on social media suggested that Mr. Trump is struggling to find a way to pressure China to use its influence on the North to de-escalate tensions. Pakistan leadership has successfully duped successive U.S. administrations reneging on their solemn promises to take action against Taliban and Al Qaeda.

In a show of force, South Korea and the United States also staged "deep strike" precision missile firing drills on Wednesday as a warning to the North. Thursday's drills were aimed at boosting readiness against possible maritime North Korean aggression.

It's unclear whether any of those issues will come up in discussions at the G-20 summit in Germany this week, at which Trump and Xi are expected to hold a bilateral meeting.

The White House statement was more reticent, saying only that the two leaders discussed a range of issues of mutual interest, including North Korea and trade relations, CNN said.

North Korea's launch this week of an intercontinental ballistic missile demonstrated a risky new reach for weapons it hopes to top with nuclear warheads one day. That's the way to end North Korea's nuclear program.
