Qatar FM: Blockade Is Result of Saudi Aggression

Qatar FM: Blockade Is Result of Saudi Aggression

Egypt is part of a quartet of Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia boycotting Qatar over alleged ties to terrorism.

On June 22nd the group presented Qatar with a 13-points demand list to comply within 10 days and then the deadline was extended for 2 more days.

The four countries accuse Doha of harbouring Islamist groups that they consider terrorist organisations - including the Muslim Brotherhood - and giving them a platform on the Al Jazeera satellite channel, which is funded by the Qatari state.

Speaking to reporters after reading the statement, Shoukri said Qatar's response to the bloc's conditions had "no substance".

Bahrain and the UAE, which are also among the countries that severed ties with Doha in June, have hinted at Qatar's ouster from the council after the latter remained defiant in the face of the demands.

Qatar also hosts the largest USA military base in the region and has declared itself as an United States ally, but Doha is accused of not only tolerating, but encouraging private funding of terrorist organizations, such as the Muslim Brotherhood and former Iraq Al Qaida group AQI, today known as ISIS.

The Saudi foreign minister, Adel Al Jubeir, said they will continue "these very unfortunate measures" against Qatar.

"Beginning in April, Qatar was subjected to a carefully orchestrated and unprecedented smear campaign aimed at misrepresenting our policies on key issues effecting the region", Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said.

One of the richest countries in the world, Qatar's vast wealth has largely been built on gas production.

Qatar is said to have sent a response to the demands formulated by the four countries whose next step has yet to be known.

The ministers did not say what their next steps would be - that, they explained, would be announced after further consultations. He expressed concern over the continuation of the crisis and stressed the United Nations support of Kuwait for its mediation efforts to solve the situation, Al Jazeera reported.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt as well as the internationally recognized government of war-torn Yemen broke off diplomatic relations with Qatar in a major global rift on June 5, 2017.

"They are constrained in what escalation measures they can take and they're facing an worldwide community that prefers some kind of negotiated settlement, which they're not really interested in, " Griffiths said.

Arab capitals gave Qatar until Monday to respond to their 13 demands, but offered a 48-hour extension at the last minute.

Amid the Cairo meeting, US President Donald Trump yesterday spoke with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi about the Qatar crisis, calling for talks to resolve the dispute, said the White House.

"To defeat terrorism, we must confront extremism, we must confront hate speech, we must confront the harboring and sheltering of extremists and terrorists, and funding them", he said.

Four Arab nations have voiced "regret" over Doha's "negative reply" to their demands, according to a joint statement.
