12 killed in Syria bombings

Security forces intercepted three auto bombers on their way into the city early on Sunday morning, Syrian state media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll of all three of Sunday's vehicle bombings at 21, including the drivers and seven members of the regime forces and their allies.

ISIS claimed responsibility for two suicide bomb attacks that killed dozens outside the Palace of Justice courthouse near the Old City in Damascus on March 15.

Most of the victims were reported in the third blast near the Tahrir Square, where 56 cars were damaged as well as the facades of three residential buildings, a military source told Xinhua.

According to State TV, the attackers planned to bomb crowded areas in the capital on the first working day after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

One of the suicide bombers blew himself up in Tahrir square in central Damascus after being encircled by the authorities.

Multiple blasts, mortar rounds hit Damascus

Damascus is rarely hit by attacks.

The identity of the jets that carried out the air strike was not known, the Observatory, a Britain-based war monitor, said.

Syria's conflict broke out with antigovernment protests in 2011 but has since evolved into a multifront war that has killed more than 320,000 people.

Also in March, a double suicide attack in the capital killed scores of people, majority Iraqi Shi'ite pilgrims.

Forces loyal to the regime of Bashar al Assad have been battling to drive rebels from Ain Terma, one of their last strongholds on the eastern outskirts of Damascus.
