Tanker and cargo ship collide in English channel

A tanker with 38,000 tonnes of petrol on board and a 220-metre (720-foot) cargo ship collided Saturday in the waters between France and Britain, but no injuries or spills have been reported, authorities said.

The Seafrontier was carrying almost 38,000 metric tons of gasoline and though both vessels were damaged in the collision, the coastguard said there was "no water ingress and no pollution".

None of the 49 crew from both ships - registered from Hong Kong with Indian and Chinese crews - were injured and all hands were accounted for.

The oil tanker Seafrontier was involved in a collision with another ship in the Dover Straits.

Bulk carrier HUAYANG ENDEAVOUR, IMO 9591492, dwt 75492, built 2013, flag HK, manager HUAYANG MARITIME CENTER, Beijing. A French tug vessel is also traveling to the two ships. The Huayan Endeavour was not loaded but was carrying a crew of 22, officials said.

British authorities in Dover, which co-ordinates rescue operations, have sent two patrol boats and two helicopters to the area and a French tugboat was also travelling there "in order to be ready to intervene if needed".

"The helicopter remained with the vessels for a short while, reporting information back to the Coastguard, before returning to base".

Counter pollution and salvage surveyors from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency are monitoring the situation.
