Google to stop scanning Gmail for ad targeting

Google already doesn't do this for business users who subscribe to its G Suite services, but until now, it routinely scanned the inboxes of its free users to better target ads for them. The policy change would put an end to the practice which has been in place since the launch of Gmail in 2004. The company has confirmed in a post on its official blog that it's no longer going to scan the email contents of Gmail users for the objective of selling targeted advertising.

The practice had stirred privacy worries and raised concerns among many users. This decision brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalise ads for other Google products. With the scanning of your Gmail inbox, Google might find that you receive a lot of email related to smartphones. Instead of mining data from your Gmail inbox, Google will look at the YouTube videos you watch, the Google searches you request, the websites you visit and the apps you use.

Deputy AG Rosenstein: Special counsel will have 'full independence' for Russian Federation probe
As attorney general, Sessions is unlikely to answer in detail questions about conversations he's had with Trump. So, of course, they would ignore Ruddy's clarification that he doesn't think Trump would actually fire Mueller.

Google's G Suite business bundle have been gaining more enterprise users in the past year, with more than 3 million companies paying for the G Suite service, the company said. The paid Gmail doesn't include ads, so the company has never tried to scan the content of those users' emails for marketing purposes. By ending all scanning, Google hopes to end the confusion and sell Gmail to even more businesses.

Gmail now ranks as the world's largest email service, which might possibly indicate that most people did not care about Google's scanning methods.
