Federer thrashes Zverev to win ninth Halle title

Roger Federer remains on course for a ninth title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle after defeating Florian Mayer in the quarter-finals.

Zverev, who had lost his first eight matches against top-10 players then beaten seven of the next 11 - including Federer in the semi-finals here past year - encountered the Swiss on one of his magical days. Despite winning in straight sets, Federer acknowledged that Russian youngster Karen Khachanov pushed him to the limits in their semi-final match.

Zverev had a little tougher day beating Richard Gasquet in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

140 Number of finals Roger Federer has entered, including today's Halle Open.

The dream final was set in Halle Saturday as Roger Federer and local wunderkind Alexander Zverev advanced to a tasty title match tomorrow.

But he quickly fell behind in the second as Zverev, a finalist past year, who has already won three titles in 2017, charged to a 4-2 lead and held on to take the set. "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tiebreaker", said Federer, who first reached the Halle final in 2003, when his opponent on Sunday was just 6".

"I'm not sure if I am going to win this tournament again so I want to enjoy it as much as I can", Federer said. Inside a minute, Federer broke Zverev to love: the tennis equivalent of Anthony Joshua knocking out a young contender with the first punch of the fight.

His huge serve was on full display when he won the 's-Hertogenbosch title on grass last week and once again he used it to devastating effect against Querrey.

This is going to be a fun match between these two talented players, as Zverev is growing up before our eyes and Federer is, well, Federer.

Cilic saved the first match point against him with an ace, and a second with a forehand volley, before a wide forehand saw Lopez take his chance at the third attempt.

Cilic then went on to play his doubles semi-final with Marcin Matkowski against Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, which was moved onto Court One because of the rain delays, as he aimed to become the first man to win both titles at Queen's since Pete Sampras in 1995. "For the others, I think Andy (Murray) was just extremely exhausted after getting to World number 1 at the end of a year ago".
