'Wonder Woman' puts 'The Mummy' to rest at weekend box office

As such, it is unlikely the Tom Cruise- and Russell Crowe-starring vehicle will lose money.

"The Mummy", starring Tom Cruise as an adventurer who uncovers the crypt of an ancient cursed princess, is receiving very bad reviews leading to its opening on Friday, with a current score of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Universal kicked off its Dark Universe this weekend with the release of The Mummy, and despite mostly negative reviews, the film has given star Tom Cruise his biggest ever global opening at the box office.

The Mummy has been relegated to second place behind box-office hit Wonder Woman, now in its second weekend.

It was a slow start for the proposed Dark Universe of monster films, with Universal Pictures' The Mummy grossing just $32.2 million from 4,035 theaters in North America. The previous installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, earned $241 million domestically and $804.6 million internationally, for a global total of $1.045 billion. According to Universal, it's the biggest worldwide opening for Cruise. A whopping 82% of that figure came from overseas territories where Cruise's star wattage is brighter. The film has a 93 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore from audiences.

Universal distribution executives trumpeted the film's worldwide performance while acknowledging the North American gross left something to be desired.

Until the rest of the Dark Universe films are released, there's The Mummy to look forward to. Also in the works is Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein. "I'm really excited to see what Bill Condon does with Bride of Frankenstein". "And kudos to the cast, especially Tom Cruise", said Universal domestic distribution president Nick Carpou of "The Mummy". Being from independent studio A24, the movie didn't come into theaters with the most amount of fan fare, but its strong critical reception gave it a boost as a refreshing change-of-pace for those looking for something a little different from traditional summer movies.

"It is the thing that kills your soul when you have just gone through an experience like this one we just went through", Kurtzman said.

Martic is ranked 290th but she took just 49 minutes to beat the Latvian and match her best performance at a Grand Slam tournament. Whoever had won that first set had big momentum. "Terrible tragedy in London, also in Manchester only six or seven days ago".

Universal has grown enormous franchises from humble beginnings before, most notably with the now dominant and never-ending "Fast and the Furious" movies.

The DC savior is now on track to potentially beat the domestic collections of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad.

There is one lone good scene, in two hours, in which a plane, carrying a mummy for some reason, spirals out of control, and Tom Cruise, playing some guy, flips around like Lionel Richie in the Dancing on the Ceiling video. The new movie focuses on the darkness and the horror, straining to say something about the human condition. "There are unlimited creative possibilities".

Lesson learned: Fear the walking dead. Salma Hayek stars as a Mexican massage therapist whose auto troubles force her to attend her clients' (played by Connie Britton and David Warshofsky) dinner party, which is also attended by their wealthy friends with more elitist views.

Wonder Woman will make way for Pixar next weekend as Cars 3 opens and should be able to break $50 million-plus to win the weekend. Universal spent $125 million on the production of the film; it made only $31.5 million of that back in the USA and Canada, according to Deadline. Made for $149 million and directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen and Lucy Davis. Even the 1999 "Mummy" opened to $43.4 million, and that's not accounting for inflation.

And at No. 3 is "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie", bringing in an estimated $12 million in its second week out.

"It Comes at Night", $6 million.

Everything, Everything (US$1.6 million).
