Lewis Hamilton looked like a child in a sweet shop after he was presented with a race worn helmet from the family of his idol, Ayrton Senna, after he matched one of the former Champion's career records.

He was little under a tenth faster than his Ferrari team mate Vettel, who had lost time running wide through the hairpin.

The 18-year-old was among the five drivers eliminated in the first 15-minute qualifying session, finishing 17th at 1:14.209 and will start the race second row from the back.

The Finn, who finished a disappointed and controversial second in Ferrari's one-two triumph at last month's Monaco Grand Prix, clocked a best lap in one minute and 12,935 seconds to outpace the Briton, who was fastest in the morning's opening session, by 0.215 seconds.

In the provisional qualifying results, Hamilton's Silver Arrows colleague Valtteri Bottas was third ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in fourth for Ferrari. He was the one who inspired me to be where I am today.

"It was close here as I had expected", Bottas said. Hamilton needed several laps to get the tires up to temperature, and then went to third with a 1:13.078. "So to match him, and to receive this, is the greatest honor".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address SCO Summit in Astana
He further said that Islamabad is not unfamiliar with the working of the SCO but, it has a lot to learn. Modi also applauded Kazakhstan for choosing "Future Energy" as the theme for this year's SCO Summit .

"I really feel welcome when I come to Canada", said Hamilton. We do all our best for the Constructors' Championship and to be able to do well you need two drivers.

Stoffel Vandoorne was 16th, 0.4s behind Alonso, while Magnussen had a delayed session and could only register a time good enough for 17th. However Vettel soon made amends with his second flying lap, which put him just four thousandths of a second off Hamilton's benchmark.

Pressure has been mounting on McLaren's engine partner Honda to deliver on promised improvements to the power unit but none have been ready for Montreal and the team continues to languish down the timesheets.

"But in Q3 when it came to go to getting those last hundreds and thousands of a second, when I was pushing harder, the vehicle became more unstable again, not so easy to predict, so I struggled more with the auto today than Lewis did".

His veteran teammate Felipe Massa was seventh in qualifying.

Canadian teenager Lance Stroll disappointed the large flag-waving home crowd when he failed to make it out of the opening round of qualifying.
