France confirms second French death in London attack: minister

When she saw the news about the attacks in London on Saturday night, she tried to call him and became anxious when she couldn't reach him.

The French national's body was found in the Thames river, London Metropolitan Police said. The next of kin of 45-year-old Xavier Thomas were informed. His girlfriend was seriously injured in the collision.

Italian news reports say the London Bridge attacker who had been stopped in Italy en route to Syria past year was subsequently listed in the European-wide intelligence-sharing system and was stopped at London's Stansted airport in January but let go.

In the aftermath of Saturday night's attack, officials confirmed that seven people were killed and dozens of others injured.

Authorities have said Australian nurse Kirsty Boden was trying to help other victims when she was killed in the attacks Saturday night on London Bridge and in Borough Market.

She also was responsible for security services that failed to keep tabs on Khuram Butt, one of three men who went on a vehicle-and-knife rampage around London Bridge on Saturday.

Speaking at her home in Italy, Valeria Collina told me that she did not believe Youssef Zaghba was risky, and thought he was happy in his job in London.

Khuram Shazad Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba have been named as the attackers, who were all shot dead.

Zaghba, an Italian-Moroccan national, was identified as a possible militant threat after he was stopped at Bologna airport in 2016 as he tried to reach Syria.

France said earlier on Wednesday that two of its citizens had died when three men drove a van into pedestrians on the bridge before going on a stabbing spree in the nearby Borough Market.

Counter-terror agencies are already facing intense scrutiny after it was revealed Butt had been known to security services.

A spate of terror attacks on British soil has moved security into the spotlight ahead of key parliamentary elections slated for Thursday.

One of the men, aged 27, was held on suspicion of the preparation of terrorist acts, while a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply controlled drugs.

Redouane claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan and also used the name Rachid Elkhdar, police said.

The revelation meant perpetrators in all three of the terrorist outrages to hit the United Kingdom this year had been on the radar at some point.

On Wednesday, NHS England said 29 patients remain in London hospitals, with 10 in a critical condition.

Butt had appeared in a Channel 4 documentary The Jihadis Next Door, broadcast a year ago.
