Apple CEO to MIT grads: Tech without values is worthless

Apple chief executive Tim Cook urged MIT graduates Friday to infuse their work with humanity, cautioning that technology alone is not enough. But he also acknowledged society's struggles with technology's downsides.

Cook began his speech by recalling when he met with Pope Francis in January.

Apple Inc. shares fell $0.08 (-0.05%) in premarket trading Tuesday.

"Tech is capable of doing great things but it doesn't to do great things", said Cook.

Some of those companies have been commenting on goings on at the White House though and Tim Cook made it clear that he disagreed with Trump over the Paris climate agreement withdrawal. "What is my objective?" For their current study of student emotional health, her team can't get certain data from an iPhone that they need.

"I kept convincing myself that it was just over the horizon, around the next corner", he said.

"I would hope that they would say we've been cooperating well and I think some valuable information".

Other recent MIT commencement speakers have included the Matt Damon (2016), USA chief technology officer Megan Smith (2015), DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman (2014), Dropbox co-founder and CEO Drew Houston (2013), and Khan Academy founder Sal Kahn (2012). He connected instantly with the company's uniquely clear and decisive mission.

Following the London Bridge terror attack, Prime Minister Theresa May said that technology companies must stop being a "safe space" for terror suspects. To illustrate that mission and its challenges, he told a more recent story about rebuffing a shareholder who objected to Apple's unprofitable environmental initiatives. In reply Cook told the investor, "If you can't accept our position, you shouldn't own Apple stock".

Among the victims were the wife of a lawmaker and six foreigners, including three from Taiwan and one from South Korea. He questioned what he was going to do with the £1.5 million haul of poker chips he had tried to take away.

But technology can often be the solution, he said, and as new alumni of MIT, the graduates were already on track to see that realized. "And sometimes it's even part of the problem".

Cook added that while he could not give further details, Apple provided the information promptly once the lawful process is followed.

As an alternative, Cook reiterated Jobs' frequent dictum that technology should be guided by the insights of the humanities and liberal arts.

"We have been cooperating with the United Kingdom government not only in law enforcement kind of matters but on some of the attacks", Cook said during a Bloomberg Television interview on Monday.

"I'm optimistic because I believe in your generation", Cook said.

Cook's speech wasn't all grim warnings and grand challenges.

Cook mentioned some of the "pretty great ones" from previous years, including sending the Mars rover to the Kresge Oval and when they put a propellor beanie on the school's Great Dome, or how they have, most recently, "taken over the president's Twitter account".

"Most of the time [technology] is a force for good", Cook said.
