Darrell Wallace Jr. to make Cup Series debut at Pocono

Darrell Wallace Jr. to make Cup Series debut at Pocono

Wallace, who will turn 24 in October, will replace the injured Aric Almirola (back) until Almirola can return to the seat of the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43 auto. Almirola and Wallace drive Fords. He'll be replacing injured Aric Almirola at Pocono Raceway.

Although he has yet to grab his first win, Wallace still has been quite successful in the XFINITY Series, where many Cup Series drivers also compete.

In 2010, Bubba was part of the "Drive for Diversity" program to get more minorities into racing and he was the K & N rookie of the year for that level of racing. After three years racing full time on the Xfinity circuit, Wallace will be the first black driver in a Cup series event since Bill Lester's two-race stint in 2006. Wallace gets to make history in the iconic No. 43 for Richard Petty Motorsports.

Richard Petty Motorsports did him one better by bringing him up to the top series in the sport.

Almirola broke his back in a crash at Kansas Speedway on May 13. "That's awesome for me to get my first start driving the No. 43 for Richard Petty and everybody at RPM".

"It just shows that we're trying to bring in a new demographic".

Hawaii enacts law to align goals with Paris climate accord

"When we look at Chase, who's a great talent, and Ruben (Garcia Jr.), who's been really consistent this year, and then you've got Macy, who as an fantastic young woman won her first race, I think it's really, really exciting", Siegel said. "We're trying to get everybody involved to bring NASCAR back".

But Bubba pushed on and now has a historic chance in the winningest auto in NASCAR history (200 wins in the # 43 driven by The King), supported by Aric's great crew and the The King is involved in RPM's race operations. Roush Fenway and Wallace Jr. will continue to look at opportunities for him to get in the Xfinity auto when sponsorship arises.

Wallace will jump in the #43 Smithfield Ford this weekend at Pocono Raceway starting with practice on Friday morning. "When stuff like [that] happens, you try to make the right phone calls and do all the right things and the opportunity will present itself at the right time", said Wallace.

"We are very proud of Bubba and his development at Roush Fenway Racing", team President Steve Newmark said. That's when he had a greater sense of his responsibility - not only carrying on the legacy started by Wendall Scott, NASCAR's first African American winning race vehicle driver - but as an example to the next generations as a NASCAR athlete. "So it's really great to see three of our alumni driving in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series".

"The transition shows the strong collaboration we now have in the Ford stable", added Newmark. "We believe that Bubba has tremendous potential and will continue to excel in NASCAR's top series".
