Petra Kvitova eases past Boserup on first day of French Open

"I'm really glad to have made the decision that I'm going to play here. I'm hoping she will be healthy", said 18-time grand slam champion Chris Evert.

"I've already won my biggest fight", she told reporters.

"I maybe thought I would cry when I stepped on the court, but I didn't, which actually I was happy [about], because normally I can control my emotion on the court so I'm happy I kind of did it this time as well". That was one of the biggest, of course.

PARIS (AP) - Sweat-soaked and still wearing her match outfit, Petra Kvitova was looking for someone to hug as she wandered into the players' lounge in the French Open's main stadium shortly after leaving the court Sunday.

The terrifying attack left the popular Kvitova fighting to save her hand and her career.

She was initially expected to make a comeback in Wimbledon, but her recovery was quicker than expected and she first began training earlier this month.

Kerber now has just two wins from her past four tournaments. 'I surprised myself with the forehand victor straightaway, ' she said.

Kvitova got rid of the splint after two weeks and started to move her fingers slightly. "Hopefully one day everything will be flawless", the two-time Wimbledon champion told reporters. "But we never know, still".

"With the heart, anything is possible", Kvitova said. Her assailant has not yet been captured.

Kvitova has not played in a tournament since she was attacked at her home in the Czech Republic in December.

"It was everything that I need to have to come back here and play again".

". It felt really weird I couldn't compete". Suddenly I couldn't do what I love. "I'm really happy that really here, the dream comes true".

Kvitova, who is seeded 15th, faces American Julia Boserup in her first-round match. When Boserup threatened to pull back from 3-0 to 3-2 in the opening set, Kvitova roared and pumped her fist when she saved a break point.

There was quite a bit of that against Boserup, who was making her debut in the French Open's main draw and facing a lefty for the first time.

Kerber lost 6-2, 6-2 to the 40th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation.

The defending champion, Garbine Muguruza, opens against 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone.

Title favorites Garbine Muguruza, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will kick off their campaign at Roland Garros on Monday.

But after practice on Friday, Halep sounded far more confident.

"Of course, the hand doesn't have that power and the strength yet, but I'm working on it". She was knocked out of the 2016 French Open in round three by America's Shelby Rogers.

It was the second successive first round exit at Roland Garros for world number one Kerber, the reigning US Open champion.
