In a statement, BA said: "Following the major IT system failure experienced earlier today, with regret we have had to cancel all flights leaving from Heathrow and Gatwick for the rest of today".

The airline has apologized for what it calls an "IT systems outage" and says it is working to resolve the problem.

Passengers on social media reported long delays and flights by the IAG-owned airline being held on runways, at the start of a long holiday weekend in Britain.

He said the crash had affected "all of our check-in and operational systems".

But, he told CNN by phone: "No alcohol, which is wise". "I mean, the frustrations are there".

"When we left the check-in area there were lots of angry people, people getting frustrated that their flights were coming up or near to departure, people getting turned away".

She said passengers had been told they could not transfer to other flights because "they can't bring up our details".

A union official, meanwhile, blamed BA cost cutting for the travel chaos, saying the airline had laid off hundreds of IT staff a year ago and outsourced the work to India.

Don Bowman, of North Carolina, tweeted that he had only seen one plane leave Terminal 5 in the past hour.

Filmmaker Philip Bloom tweeted that he was stuck on the tarmac at Heathrow after his delayed flight from Belfast, Northern Ireland, finally landed because there was no space for the aircraft to park.

Another posted: "British Airways computers down T5 and standstill, stranded on the plane and they make us pay for food!"
