Trump hotels won't ask if stays paid with foreign govt money

To look into all patrons' backgrounds would invade their privacy and "diminish the guest experience of our brand", it says.

Before taking office, Trump pledged that all profits earned from foreign governments would be donated back to the U.S. Treasury because "he wants to do more than what the Constitution requires", Sheri Dillon, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, said in a January news conference. To avoid running afoul of the law, the Trump Organization had announced prior to Trump's inauguration that it would donate the all profits from foreign governments to the US Treasury.

George Sorial, the Trump Organization's Chief Compliance Counsel, responded with a letter directing the lawmakers to the policy pamphlet and said it is being implemented at all Trump hotel, golf, social club and winery locations.

The company said that it will tally up only money it takes in from only those who have specifically identified themselves as working for a foreign government entity.

Instead, the businesses will only track transactions where it is obvious that the bill is being paid directly by a foreign government, a foreign political party, a sovereign wealth fund, or a member of a royal family.

President Trump's company is refusing to comply with the Constitution's Emoluments Clause, backtracking on its plan to donate all profits from foreign governments to the Treasury Department, a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform report claims.

This is also part of the general Trump business plan. The emoluments clause of the constitution forbids U.S. officials from being paid by a "foreign state".

Jaitley said that in case the Council is unable to complete discussions, it might decide to meet again in the "near future". Currently, there are 17 items in the negative list of services on which service tax is not levied.

As Maryland representative Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, wrote in a letter to the Trump Organization, that's a woefully inadequate setup.

A Trump representative said that "the pertinent accounting rules" are well understood in the hospitality industry.

It plans to make its payments to the US treasury in annual lump sums.

Control of his businesses was handed over to his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, and a longtime executive, Alan Weisselberg, but Trump maintained a financial stake through a trust established for the "exclusive benefit" of the president.
