FinMin claims lower tax on entertainment services under GST

New Delhi- The Goods and Services Tax (GST) will lead to lower tax burden in several commodities, including packaged cement, medicaments, smartphones and medical devices, the Finance Ministry said on Tuesday. Now under the GST bill, there is 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent tax slab; this might be reduced to 1 or 2 tax slabs. Puja samagri including haven samagri has been kept under the "nil" category, though exact formulation for the same is yet to be finalised. However, presently a total tax of more than 13.5% is levied on smart phones.

With a little more than a month remaining for the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the country, the GST council has indicated that under the new tax regime there is huge scope for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to grow further. Apart from this, service tax is also charged at the rate of 15 percent. In addition, companies pay central sales tax, octroi and entry tax, among others. "As against this, the rate of GST approved by GST Council on these services is 18 percent", said the finance ministry.

Bridge to India calculates that the new tax regime will lift by 18% the photovoltaic (PV) module cost, add 3% to all service costs, and increase inverter costs by roughly 12%.
