Man allegedly tries to rush cockpit on flight from LAX to Hawaii

Anil Uskanil has been arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor trespassing and likely faces additional charges after being detained by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents for causing a disturbance on an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu on Friday.

The "unruly passenger" aboard American Airlines Flight 31 from Los Angeles to Honolulu was subdued after trying to rush toward the cockpit with a blanket over his head.

LAX police identified the man as Anil Uskanil, CBS News' Kris Van Cleave reports.

After the disturbance, Uskanil was escorted back to his seat, where he was restrained with duct tape, according to witnesses.

Two F-22 Raptors from the Hawaiian Air National Guard escorted the plane for the final part of the flight, Navy Cmdr.

American Airlines spokeswoman Katie Cody told the Associated Press that there were 181 passengers and six crew members aboard the flight, but that no injuries were reported. Airport police determined he had been drinking, but he did not meet the criteria for being drunk in public, LAX police said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed both knowledge of the disturbance and Uskanil's detainment through a written statement.

American Airlines says Uskanil then went back thru a TSA checkpoint in Terminal 4 where his flight to Honolulu was leaving from and boarded the flight.

First class passenger Lee Lorenzen told KITV that he, "saw the flight attendant with a panicked look and she rammed the cart into the entrance to first class".

Eyewitnesses have said a flight attendant used an airplane drink cart to prevent a man from reaching the front of the jet.

American Airlines said it did not immediately know the person's nationality. "Local law enforcement responded once the civilian airliner was on the ground", said Commander Dave Benham.

Lorenzen said the man tried with all his force to push against the cart. They found some duct tape. He was arrested for misdemeanor trespassing, cited, given a pending court date and released from custody.

According to HawaiiNewsNow, the man was Turkish and had earlier breached security at Los Angeles International Airport but "was assessed and allowed to board" the flight anyway. The statement said the DHS would "continue to monitor all flights out of an abundance of caution" and "provide updates as necessary".
