Manning will be on "excess leave" - meaning she is considered to be off-duty - while her court-martial conviction is under appellate review, an Army spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Jennifer Johnson, said.

Manning said at the time that she had hoped to spark "worldwide discussion, debates and reforms" with the information, bringing to light what she saw as an unfair portrayal of the US wars.

Chelsea Manning was freed from a military prison on Wednesday, having served seven of a 35-year sentence for revealing government secrets.

In a statement to ABC, Manning said, "I appreciate the wonderful support that I have received from so many people across the world over these past years".

She defended the leaking by saying she had wanted to spark a public debate in the U.S. about the role of the military and USA foreign policy, but later apologised for "hurting the US", saying she had mistakenly believed she could "change the world for the better".

"First steps of freedom!" she wrote on Instagram alongside a smiling emoji and the hashtag "chelseaisfree".

Manning was court-martialed and sentenced in 2013 to 35 years in prison, the longest sentence ever imposed for a leak conviction in us history.

Manning provided more than 750,000 classified documents to WikiLeaks, which included military and diplomatic dispatches.

Pulse Films announced Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival in France that Manning would be the focus of a documentary titled "XY Chelsea" and has granted filmmakers "unprecedented access". The film is titled "XY Chelsea" and will be directed by British filmmaker Tim Travers Hawkins and executive produced by "Citizenfour" filmmaker Laura Poitras.
