Mahendra Singh Dhoni will protect the stumps while Virat Kohli will lead the team.

Shami, who has been regularly turning up for Delhi Daredevils in the ongoing Indian Premier League, felt it was a good platform for him to prepare for the Champions Trophy.

Shami, who last played for India in an ODI, back in 2015 World Cup, has been included in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy and thus is looking for a fresh start in the 50-over format. "The All-India Senior Selection Meeting will be held tomorrow, May 8, in New Delhi to pick the team", said a statement released by the BCCI after the meeting in the national capital.

Prasad said that the main players who were discussed at length for selection were Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur, each of whom has been placed on standby for the tournament. India will play their first match against Pakistan on June 4. The off-spinner played a crucial role in helping India win the Champions Trophy in 2013. Also, Rohit Sharma makes a comeback to the squad after being sidelined for more than 6 month due to injury that he suffered in the series against New Zeland.

"The BCCI SGM unanimously decided that the Indian cricket team will participate in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy", said a statement issued by the board.
