Montana Deputy shot, killed in shootout

A Montana sheriff's deputy was shot and killed during an early morning traffic stop Tuesday. His name hasn't been released. The white SUV was the vehicle being pursued. Marshall Barrus was shot in the head and taken to the hospital.

According to the Gallatin County Sheriff's office, the suspects have been identified and are in custody in Missoula County.

The shooting touched off a search that resulted in a pre-dawn chase covering more than 140 miles in southwestern Montana and ending in a shoot-out that sent one suspect to the hospital and his father to jail.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin says a Broadwater County deputy was pursuing a vehicle on U.S. Highway 287 when dispatchers lost contact with him at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The Billings Fire Department raises a flag over North 27th Street as a procession of law enforcement vehicle escorts the body of slain sheriff's deputy Mason Moore to St. Vincent Healthcare, Tuesday, May 16, 2017 in Billings, Mont. When a Gallatin deputy arrived at the scene, he found Moore lying dead near the side of the road.

Investigators found the deputy's vehicle in a ditch and used its dashboard camera to identify the sport utility vehicle he was pursuing, Gootkin said.

A statewide alert was issued for the suspect vehicle and it was spotted near Anaconda where a pursuit began. Missoula County Sheriff's say a chase began and the vehicle went over a spike strip in Powell County, but kept driving.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop at mile marker 129 on I-90 near the Rock Creek exit, and the suspects began firing at the pursuing officers.

All black everything for Celtics before Game 6 at Wizards
We couldn't take care of business tonight - an unbelievable shot by John Wall - but to have Game 7 back in Boston in the Garden. The Wizards need their stars, John Wall and Bradley Beal, to play like stars after a middling game five performance.

Gootkin says the passenger, 39-year-old Marshall Barrus, got out and shot at officers who returned fire.

However, three Butte police cars were damaged by gunshots and taken to Missoula for investigation purposes.

Barrus' father, 61-year-old Lloyd Barrus, was arrested on suspicion of deliberate homicide.

The father is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday in Missoula Justice Court.

Three Butte-Silver Bow sheriff's vehicles were hit by gunfire, two of them seriously enough to be disabled. A total of five law enforcement vehicles have been impounded to be processed for evidence.

At this time, Highway 287 from I-90 to MT 2 is closed out of Three Forks as the investigation continues.
