Macron to name PM on first day as French President

The new French President Emmanuel Macron is set to name a prime minister, and to visit German Chancellor Angela Merkel on his first full day in office as a president today, reported AFP. "Will have a big effect on presidential election!"

His age reinforces the generational shift in France's corridors of power and the image of youthful vigour that Mr Macron is cultivating. When Juppe was beaten, Philippe switched his support to Francois Fillon for the French presidency but then quit the campaign when prosecutors started investigating allegations that Fillon's family benefited illegally from cushy taxpayer-funded jobs.

Mr Macron has promised such reforms as he tries to revive the economy and reduce unemployment, but to realise them his party will need a majority in parliament.

That said, Macron will still seek an equal-footed partnership with the US, Fyodorov said, adding that in foreign policy Macron will stay the course of his predecessor, Francois Hollande, and will keep fighting worldwide terrorism as part of the US-led coalition.

The chancellor's coalition is at odds over how to respond to his calls for closer European Union integration, with some conservatives fearful the euro zone could develop into a "transfer union" in which Germany is asked to pay for spendthrift states.

Merkel said ahead of the meeting: "Germany will in the long term only do well if Europe does well, and the election of the new French president offers us the opportunity to bring dynamism to European development".

Macron wants to smash the left-right divide which has dominated France for decades, and his start-up centrist Republic on the Move (REM) party, which is just a year old, needs to forge a wide base of support.
