Macron to name PM on first day as French President

The new French President Emmanuel Macron is set to name a prime minister, and to visit German Chancellor Angela Merkel on his first full day in office as a president today, reported AFP. "Will have a big effect on presidential election!"

Philippe served as Juppe's campaign spokesman during the Republicans party primary. Newly elected president Emmanuel Macron's party is due to announce the list of candidates on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Mr Juppe described the new prime minister as "a man of great talent" with "all the qualities to handle the hard job".

Philippe has been the mayor of Le Havre, a port city in the Normandy region of northern France, since 2010 and became a member of parliament for the region two years later.

Meanwhile, German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel recently praised the En Marche! leader telling the 39-year-old: "From what I can see, you are the only presidential candidate in France who is driving a clear and unambiguous course for Europe".

"French presidents are free to choose their prime ministers, but only if they hold a majority in the National Assembly", the Times reports.

His age reinforces the generational shift in France's corridors of power and the image of youthful vigour that Mr Macron is cultivating. When Juppe was beaten, Philippe switched his support to Francois Fillon for the French presidency but then quit the campaign when prosecutors started investigating allegations that Fillon's family benefited illegally from cushy taxpayer-funded jobs.

Mr Macron has promised such reforms as he tries to revive the economy and reduce unemployment, but to realise them his party will need a majority in parliament.

French President Emmanuel Macron's choice for prime minister is about to be named at 2:30 p.m. (1230 GMT). "Philippe knows his way around EU affairs and is a strong proponent of Franco-German friendship", Martin Selmayr, the head of cabinet under European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, wrote on his Twitter account.

The run-up to the meeting had been marked by a row among senior German politicians over how to respond to Macron's calls for closer European Union integration, with some concerned that Berlin would be asked to pay for struggling states that resist reforms.

Merkel said it's important for French people, particularly the young, to have more hope of jobs.

That said, Macron will still seek an equal-footed partnership with the US, Fyodorov said, adding that in foreign policy Macron will stay the course of his predecessor, Francois Hollande, and will keep fighting worldwide terrorism as part of the US-led coalition.

The chancellor's coalition is at odds over how to respond to his calls for closer European Union integration, with some conservatives fearful the euro zone could develop into a "transfer union" in which Germany is asked to pay for spendthrift states.

Merkel said ahead of the meeting: "Germany will in the long term only do well if Europe does well, and the election of the new French president offers us the opportunity to bring dynamism to European development".

Macron wants to smash the left-right divide which has dominated France for decades, and his start-up centrist Republic on the Move (REM) party, which is just a year old, needs to forge a wide base of support.
