BC Greens gain two more seats in 2017 provincial election

BC Greens gain two more seats in 2017 provincial election

In the same area in the 2013 provincial election, the Greens, NDP and Liberals came within 379 votes of each other.

The Green Party holds three seats, and pending the results of absentee ballots and a recount in Courtenay-Comox, the balance of power.

Weaver had requests to speak with B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark and NDP leader John Horgan Wednesday after a preliminary vote count Tuesday night left Clark one seat short of a majority.

Clark made clear her plans to remain as premier, saying she would continue to lead government, hinting events could perhaps deliver her a majority yet.

If the students had their say, the NDP would have formed government with 60 seats, the Green Party would have been the official opposition with 14 seats and the Liberals would have won just 12 seats. "We'll get decisions but they will take longer, they will often be more complicated because there will be layered issues in those compromises".

Still, Norman Ruff, an associate professor emeritus at the University of Victoria who has studied B.C. politics since 1968, said Mr. Weaver has transformed the Greens from an environmental movement to a modern political party that, regardless of Tuesday's results, now has the apparatus to compete heartily in numerous ridings.

"My focus is on the people of British Columbia and if Mr. Weaver and others want to join with me, I am happy to do that". The Green Party led in 3 districts, headed for potentially its best performance ever.

British Columbia had the highest rate of economic growth among Canada's provinces in 2015 and is projected to have repeated that performance in 2016. "We don't even know the final results yet". The party is not linked to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's federal Liberal Party and is more right-leaning.

Judge refers theft allegations against Uber to prosecutors
If this case goes against them, it could effectively put them out of the running in the race to autonomous vehicle technology. It also compounds Uber's other legal problems, he said in an interview Friday.

Clark said she is prepared to meet with both Horgan and Weaver, but she sounded most conciliatory toward the Greens, noting that they doubled their popular vote and added two seats.

Advance votes are still being counted tonight and could swing the result in some close ridings.

Horgan said B.C. voters sent a signal they want to take big money out of politics, take action on climate change and move towards proportional representation. "He may have the effect of delegitimating his own party and the NDP by putting them in power".

"Site C is being constructed for an industry that does not exist, the LNG industry, and so desperate are the BC Liberals to actually land LNG that they sign contracts to subsidize LNG ... to the tune of 6 cents a kilowatt hour", said Weaver.

"In the days ahead there will be plenty of discussions taking place between all parties".

The usually affable Horgan led an aggressive campaign to bring his party's seats within two of the Liberals, showing he is not above getting dirty in the political trenches to secure victory.

For example, the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain expansion has been strongly supported by the Liberals but widely opposed by the NDP.

In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Clark told reporters she never thought it was going to be anything but a really tough election.
