China says it has successfully tested new type of missile

Of course, left unsaid was China's support of its North Korean allies, who above all do not want to see anti-missile defenses in South Korea.

"The People's Liberation Army Rocket Force conducted tests of new types of missiles somewhere in Bohai in recent days, and achieved desired results", South China Morning Post quoted that the ministry, as saying in a statement. It did not reveal the type of missile or provide other details.

Although the missile test may have been scheduled in advance, some experts suspect that the test, of what is believed to be a DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missile, was intended as a warning. The Bohai Gulf lies just west of the Yellow Sea, which separates China from the Korean Peninsula.

Asked if the test's location in the Bohai Sea, close to the tensed Korean Peninsula, could show that the test was specifically aimed at Seoul's THAAD deployment, Song said that this was unlikely as Bohai is China's usual weapons testing ground.

Beijing opposes the system, known by its acronym, THAAD, because its radars are allegedly capable of peering deep into China, allowing the US and its allies to better detect rocket launches and aircraft movements.

Though the timing is maybe a little more than fortuitous, ABC (and Seacrest) are not showing all their cards about who from the original series might be involved, if anyone.

Beijing is wary of North Korea's nuclear weapons program, but has also stayed strongly opposed to the deployment of THAAD in central South Korea.

Our positions should be judged not for what Trump proclaims but by the reality of China's activities.

The Chinese weapon tested was likely a DF-26 intermediate range missile being developed to sink warships, including USA aircraft carriers, said Song Zhongping, an expert on military affairs and commentator for Hong Kong's Phoenix TV.

In April, China's foreign ministry said THAAD undermines national security interests and warned "necessary measures" would be taken in response to the deployment.
