Amazon cuts free shipping minimum to $25

Amazon cuts free shipping minimum to $25

The change won't affect Target REDcard credit or debit cardholders, who will continue to get free shipping with no minimum purchase requirement.

Enter Wal-Mart, which since its $3.3 billion acquisition of Jet a year ago and the hire of Jet founder Marc Lore appears to believe that Amazon's emphasis on Prime has left a segment of e-commerce to be disrupted. The new minimum price has been set into motion sometime last week although the exact time is unknown. Amazon dropped the free-shipping minimum back to $35 one year after it increased the threshold to $49 per order, and a few weeks after Walmart introduced its new $35 minimum order policy for free shipping. Target for instance, has raised its minimum free shipping from $25 to $35 - which is sort of unusual. Amazon still needs to worry about Walmart's two day shipping though, wherein you receive whatever you order in 2-days. "The fact that Amazon didn't outright match Wal-mart's free shipping timeline shows their continued commitment to the recurring revenue Prime model". In April, the retailer announced it would offer a discount on select items that are ordered online and then picked up in the store. And today's drop suggests Amazon is now more concerned with competing with Walmart than using the shipping minimum as another way to boost Prime subscriptions. It has made this decision after Walmart added support for free two-day shipping on all orders under $35 without requiring any membership. For the most part, these plans offer the free program for orders of more than $35.

With more consumers shopping from their computers, online retailers have been battling it out to gain and retain customers. It is left to its competition to decide whether it is worth matching in order to keep or draw customers.
