Trump Seeks To Reinvigorate His Base With A Speech At The NRA

President Donald Trump pledged to collaborate with gun rights activists during a speak before the National Rifle Association (NRA). "No longer will government be trying to undermine your rights and your freedoms as Americans".

"Freedom is not a gift from government".

"We've also taken action to stand up for America's sportsmen", Trump said. "On their very last full day in office, the previous administration issued an 11th hour rule to restrict the use of lead ammunition on certain federal lands". He then turned his attention to perhaps his biggest gun-related accomplishment to date: appointing NRA-approved nominee Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. "Freedom is a gift from God", Trump said.

"I think it's going to be a mixed bag", Holtzclaw said "I think that some gun owners are going to feel that he's done the best that he can".

The crowd cheered again.

In recent years, various massacres have encouraged a greater debate on gun control in the US society, even though the defenders of curbing down their possession -a right enshrined in the Second Amendment of the US Constitution- made little progress. The speech was received with the kind of energy and excitement more common to a campaign rally than an annual political conference.

"I am also proud to be the first sitting president to address the NRA Leadership Forum since our wonderful Ronald Reagan", Trump said. On Friday, when President Donald Trump delivered a message of support to the NRA, about 300 protesters staged a "die-in" before marching to the convention site. "US!", cast gun ownership as a constitutionally protected freedom that needed no additional restrictions.

The NRA - which claims five million members including many white, rural voters - was one of the most steadfast supporters of Trump's against-the-odds presidential bid.

Mr Trump told the audience that "responsible gun ownership saves lives" - and added that banning guns would mean only criminals remain armed. "These are risky times. for certain obvious reasons. No, ma'am.' It may be Pocahontas, remember that", Trump said, referring to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) with a racist nickname he coined during the 2016 campaign.

Before Trump's speech, one of the signs that flashed on a video board in the hall said that "even after the election, the anti-gun left still has us in their cross-hairs".

"And while we thank you for your help on the fix of the [Interstate] 85 bridge, please feel free to leave more money in the federal budget for critical transit agencies like MARTA [Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority] so we aren't so auto dependent going forward".
