SC GOP Race to Succeed Mulvaney in Congress Going to a Runoff

Two state House GOP colleagues will face off for the chance to replace former South Carolina Congressman Mick Mulvaney, while a former Goldman Sachs tax adviser won the Democratic nomination outright. He will face the Republican victor of the May 16 runoff between state House Speaker Pro Tem Tommy Pope and former state Rep. Ralph Norman.

The seat, vacated by Office of Budget and Management Director Mick Mulvaney, is expected to be somewhat competitive but still considered favorably Republican.

"I applaud all three Democratic candidates - Alexis Frank, Les Murphy, and Archie Parnell - for throwing their hats into the ring and for running a positive, issues-focused campaign". District 70 is comprised of parts of Lower Richland and Sumter counties.

Both Pope and Norman hail from York County, which borders Charlotte.

Mumbai, on the other hand, will know two more wins and they will have one foot in the play-offs and that should prop up the side. Last but not the least is Harbhajan Singh, who has now bowled 26 overs in seven matches with an astounding economy rate of 5.88.

Norman finished just behind Pope district-wide, receiving 11,782 votes or 30.09 percent. Tom Mullikin came in third with 19 percent and Chad Connelly was fourth with 14 percent.

Turnout for the primaries was low district-wide with only 60,439 or 12.27 percent of the district's 492,731 registered voters casing ballots. Only those who voted in the Republican primary or those who did not vote in either primary may vote in the runoff. The victor of each primary will advance to a special election on June 20.

The victor of the Democratic runoff in District 70 will meet Republican Bill Strickland in a June 20 special election.

Parnell raised the most money by far among the three Democrats. Democrat John Spratt held a somewhat differently configured version of the district for 28 years until Mulvaney beat him soundly in 2010.
