Far-right to rally in Berkeley after Coulter talk canceled

The strong police presence was noted and actually appreciated by members of both groups.

Coulter told Fox News' Tucker Carlson on "Tucker Carlson Tonight" on Thursday that Berkeley claimed the threat of violence is what led to the cancellation, but she's not buying it.

He denied that Coulter was unwelcome because of her political positions. Campus officials say, well, that violence was perpetrated by outside groups and not students.

Berkeley student Joseph Pagadara, 19, said he had been anxious about violence and added that the university is caught in the middle of the country's political divide. "I didn't have any sponsors, I didn't have Berkeley...."

By 1 p.m., university officials announced that two arrests had been made by campus police: One person was arrested for allegedly carrying a knife on campus. Many were geared up - with helmets, shields and padding - for a confrontation at a public park, just blocks from the campus. Civic Center Park, a city park several blocks from the campus. But she changed her mind after student organisers withdrew their invitation, though they vowed to press ahead with a lawsuit filed on Tuesday accusing UC Berkeley of suppressing freedom of speech.

Some at the rally in downtown Berkeley are wearing combat gear, including military grade ballistic helmets and body armor. Later today, there's a pro-Coulter and pro-Trump group called the Proud Boys who will stage an event at a nearby park. He delivered the speech Coulter had planned to give on illegal immigration, on her behalf, to the crowd's raucous applause. Why do we owe them? "It's unacceptable", McInnes said as he left the gathering surrounded by private security. Nope! Because I support free speech, and I understand that "free speech" includes speech that I don't like.

I understand the argument that hateful speech and serious misinformation shouldn't be allowed to linger unchecked, like a miasma that corrupts everything it touches.

Germany's Merkel arrives in Russian Federation for talks with Putin
The White House statement said Trump and Putin also "spoke about how best to resolve the very risky situation in North Korea". The Kremlin statement made no mention of safe zones, and Putin's spokesman said they had not been discussed in detail.

On its Facebook page, the group calls itself a fraternal organization aimed at "reinstating a spirit of Western chauvinism during an age of globalism and multiculturalism". Some had "Build That Wall" or Trump stickers across their headgear.

UC Berkeley officials had said they were unable to provide a safe place for Coulter's proposed Thursday event, amid concerns of violent protests.

Earlier this month, a bloody brawl broke out in downtown Berkeley at a pro-Trump protest that featured speeches by members of the white nationalist right. After all, in his piece, he brags that the Alt Right Delete conference will be "understanding the growth of the far right, the left's long history of anti-fascist organizing, free speech as a principle of the left".

While the thuggish and grotesque riot that forced the cancellation of the January appearance at Berkeley of conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos was inspired largely, but not exclusively, by students, the University's craven administrators were certainly complicit in the exclusion of conservative views from campus.

The liberal American Civil Liberties Union would disagree with Bell's assertion, as the group has stated Coulter's right to free speech was violated by the school cancelling her planned appearance. The counter demonstrations were in stark contrast to earlier violent clashes.

Ann Coulter was nowhere to be found in Berkeley on Thursday, but hundreds of protesters showed up anyway.
