South African ex-minister sacked by Zuma resigns as MP

The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party said on Wednesday that it had filed an urgent court application to have Zuma's decision to remove Gordhan and deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas set aside on the grounds that it was unlawful. "We think that after all his undeniable contribution to both the movement and government, the time has arrived for him to step down and allow the country to be led forward by a new collective at a government level".

Last Thursday's dismissal of finance minister Pravin Gordhan, a totem of policymaking stability for many foreign investors, was criticised by unions, civil society groups and the opposition, and has revived pressure on Zuma to quit.

Meanwhile, the throngs of Bay residents gathered at the City Hall shouted repeatedly, "Zuma must go".

Politicians both within Zuma's African National Congress (ANC) and the DA decried the move as irresponsible in a country where unemployment is already at a staggering 26 percent and growth stagnated to just 0.3 percent previous year.

Mhlauli says as ANC members of parliament, they derive their political mandate from the organisation.

The African National Congress acknowledged the growing calls for Zuma to resign, admitting to "serious and hard disagreement" over his sacking of respected finance minister Pravin Gordhan last week.

The secretary-general said any anti-Zuma movements won't work but will instead force the party to close ranks:"It will take South Africans appreciating that we are an organisation, we have a responsibility and a task to discuss issues and take decisions before recalling Zuma".

Gordhan's removal triggered unprecedented criticism from Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as well as the party's chief whip, its treasurer and several ANC allies.

Last weekend, Ramaphosa appeared to be distancing himself from Zuma in a speech calling for national renewal, though he did not mention the president by name.

"We expect the changes to add renewed energy into the Cabinet and the executive as a whole", he said, referring to the Cabinet reshuffle, which he said had added "many young ministers".

"He explained his reasons then to us that his relationship between himself and finance minister Gordhan was not good‚" she said.

Gordhan was replaced by Home affairs minister, Malusi Gigaba after a month-long battle with Zuma over government spending.

Moody's ratings agency too said it was placing its South Africa rating - two notches above "junk" status - on review for a downgrade, due to "the abrupt change in leadership of key government institutions".

The calls being made online were for Jacob Zuma to step down.
