Delta Will Now Pay Almost $10000 When You Give up Your Seat

A United spokesperson told TMZ the change was made "to make sure crews traveling on our aircraft are booked at least 60 minutes prior to departure". American Airlines updated its rules to say that no passenger who has boarded the plane will be removed to give the seat to someone else.

For instance, a report in Forbes said a family got bumped three times due to back-to-back overbooked flights over the weekend, netting them a windfall of US$11,000 in compensation.

That $0.08 is no aberration-Delta has historically paid out the least in cash among the U.S. airlines when it comes to compensating travelers who get pushed off overbooked flights.

None would describe their limits on paying passengers. According to Department of Transportation statistics, the major USA airlines bumped 475,054 passengers previous year - 434,425 voluntarily and 40,629 involuntarily.

"We need to use this regrettable event as a defining moment and pivot off it to craft friendly policies", Milton said in a note to employees.

Clearly, without saying so, the move was to avoid a similar incident that has plagued United Airlines for the past week - that of the video showing one of its passengers being bloodied and dragged down the aisle of a Chicago to Louisville flight on Sunday night before the plane left the gate area.

There's one big downside to vouchers, as a commenter at the travel blog that broke the news of Delta's new cap, One Mile At A Time, pointed out: They can only be used once, so even if a traveller received a $9,950 voucher, it could only be redeemed for a single, lavish, flight, rather than split across several cheaper flights over time-which wouldn't be a problem with cash. If Delta paid $9,950 to every person it bumped involuntarily a year ago, that would total $12 million.

But not every Delta gate offers gift cards from American Express, which are almost as good as cash.

An AP analysis of government data shows that in 2015 and 2016, Delta paid an average of $1,118 in compensation for every passenger that it denied a seat. Passengers said the offers stopped at $800.
