"How does my hair look", she asked before blowing out the candles on her 117th birthday cake previous year.

Emma Morano, who was born on November 19 1899, was believed to be the last surviving person in the world who was born in the 1800s.

Emma Morano passed away sitting in an armchair at her home in the Italy town of Verbania.

Dr Bava said he had last paid his near-daily call on her on Friday.

Morano, born November 29, 1899, was believed to have been the last surviving person in the world who was born in the 1800s.

She also defied health advice, Bava said Saturday.

"We will always remember the strength (she possessed) for moving forward, her combative attitude against adversity", said Verbania Mayor Silvia Marchionini.

She had attributed her longevity to her genetics and a diet of three eggs a day, two of them raw.

Over the years she also worked as a cook in a boarding school until she retired at the age of 75, and remained single, although she never divorced her husband. "She was slowly fading away", he said.

A relative told The Daily Telegraph that Morano said, "My word, I'm as old as the hills".

The eldest of eight children, Morano outlived all of her younger siblings. "I was 26. We got married".

She had clung to her independence, only taking on a full-time carer a couple of years ago, though she had not left her small two-room apartment for 20 years.

Her Eyesight did become very poor and she latterly spent much of her days sleeping.

A woman in Jamaica, Violet Brown, who was born in that Caribbean island on March 10, 1900, is now considered the oldest known person in the world, according to a list kept by the Gerontology Research Group.

As a single woman, she made a living making jute bags and working in a hotel, the AP reported a year ago.
