Officers fired after punching, kicking man during arrest — GRAPHIC

"The video was contrary to what was reported by Michael Bongiovanni", the department said in a statement. His department issued firearm was also taken from him. "There was a time when police could say, 'We need to wait for the full investigation.' Now, some departments are recognizing the importance of responding".

McDonald started working at Gwinnett PD in August 2013 and graduated from the police academy in March 2014.

The former officers could face criminal charges.

Ayers said McDonald apologized for what occurred and for embarrassing the department.

The department fired Bongiovanni Thursday evening about two hours after the second video surfaced. The actions of these officers completely undermine their credibility and they can not be relied upon as witnesses in any pending prosecution.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Lawrenceville-area intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

Ayers said commanders were investigating the use of force before the videotape surfaced.

Cellphone video, captured by neighbor Naomi Montaie, shows the officer then shoving Cain, slamming him to the ground and climbing on top of him while beating him repeatedly in the head. He also had an outstanding warrant for another misdemeanor charge, police said.

"The suspect in that video was lying down he was clearly handcuffed, he was clearly not resisting and he was not a threat to anyone".

Police said they will likely release more details by close of business Wednesday.

Marlyn Tillman, president of the Gwinnett County branch of the NAACP, called the incident in Lawrenceville "heinous".

"When I first saw the video, I immediately got the chills", Page told ABC News. Both police officers, who have not been identified, appear to be white.

Late Friday afternoon, the Gwinnett County Solicitor's office confirmed that both of Hollins' cases - from 2016 and 2017 - have been dismissed by the county because of the involvement of Sgt. Bongiovanni and Officer McDonald.

Hollins yelled and began to "act unusual", and based on that and the officer's recollection of Hollins' behavior during a previous arrest in August, Bongiovanni called for backup, the report says.

The officer then realized he had arrested Hollins in August 2016 for having marijuana and a loaded gun in the auto.

According to official report of what happened, released by Gwinnett Police, another officer, M. Bongiovanni, said he watched a auto fail to use a turn signal. At this point, he requested backup.

Hollins was driving a red Acura with no license plate and a brake light that didn't work, according to an incident report filed by Bongiovanni. At one point, Hollins reached under a seat where officers later found a gun. He said Hollins yelled at him when asked who owned the vehicle, and refused to get out. That's when McDonald arrived to assist, according to the report.

Hollins, 21, was seen in his booking photo with a bloodied nose and lips. It wasn't immediately clear whether either man had an attorney who could comment.
