Trump says US prepared to deal with North Korea on its own

Trump and Xi are also expected to discuss Chinese ambitions in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. And China has great influence over North Korea.

The Trump administration has already signalled growing impatience with North Korea.

"I think a lot is going to depend on what happens between now and the end of the month", Haley said at a news conference marking the USA assumption of the U.N. Security Council presidency for April. "And if they do, that will be very good for China, and if they don't, it won't be good for anyone", Trump was quoted as saying.

Trump said he had "great respect" for President Xi and "great respect for China", but warned that if Beijing did not use its influence on Pyongyang, the United States might take unilateral action.

Trump has already signaled via Twitter that he expects his meeting with Xi to be hard.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is pictured here inspecting the Korean People's Army Tank Crews' Competition-2017 at an undisclosed location.

The relationship between the United States and China has been uncertain since Trump's election. Many take just two words: North Korea, fair trade, currency manipulation, patent theft, cyber assault. Trump, however tweeted last week that he expects "a very difficult" meeting.

And at the same time, he's asking China to do more to rein in North Korea's nuclear program and suggesting that if China doesn't help, the USA will tackle the issue itself.

Since Trump took office, North Korea has tested a new solid-fueled, road-mobile, mid-range ballistic missile, fired four extended range scuds into the Sea of Japan in a rehearsal for strikes on USA bases in Japan, tested multiple high-thrust rocket engines for the possible development of an intercontinental ballistic missile, and tested an unidentified projectile.

China has been irritated at being told repeatedly by Washington to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, or face US sanctions on Chinese businesses trading with North Korea, and by the USA decision to base an advanced missile defense system in South Korea.

"It is all about trade", Trump said in the interview when asked how he could convince China to listen to USA demands.

In his confirmation hearing in January, Tillerson compared China's actions to Russia's annexation of Crimea, adding, "We're going to have to send China a clear signal that first, the island-building stops, and second, your access to those islands is also not going to be allowed".

Trump made complaints about China's alleged currency manipulation and exploitation of lax United States trade rules a mainstay of his economically nationalist campaign. China isn't as anxious about North Korea's nuclear program as it is the potential collapse of the country itself, which would create a refugee crisis on the peninsula and likely send millions of North Koreans pouring across the Chinese-North Korean border. If they don't cooperate, "it won't be good for anyone". This is indispensable journalism, brought to you by the largest, most experienced newsroom in the region.
