Texas deputy constable fatally shot after arriving for work

The suspect in a fatal shooting of a Houston-area deputy on Monday is still at large.

Authorities later confirmed the wounded deputy died after he was airlifted to the hospital.

Following the shooting, the courthouse, several nearby business and Sterling High School were placed on lockdown as the manhunt for the shooter continued.

As of Monday, 33 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty this year, up from 31 during the same period a year ago, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Before working at the Precinct 3 Constable's Office, Greenwood oversaw the Internal Affairs Division in the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

In this Thursday, July 21, 2016, photo, Harris County Sheriff's Office Maj. Chief Deputy Clint Greenwood, a veteran law enforcement officer and attorney, was shot in the neck and killed this morning by a killer who is still on the run.

As of late morning, no suspect had been found and officials did not say if Greenwood was specifically targeted.

'Texas is taking action to strengthen penalties for those brazen enough to commit crimes against law enforcement, and we will send a message that such vile acts will not be tolerated'.
