Two Tory MPs reveal CPS is reviewing their election spending

Two Tory MPs reveal CPS is reviewing their election spending

Investigations into the party's "battle bus campaign" during the last general election have looked at whether strict spending limits in target seats were exceeded.

In a statement to the Evening Standard, the Metropolitan Police said it had received four complaints and detectives had been given a special time extension to investigate one because of "exceptional circumstances".

The revelation follows a 10-month investigation by police forces across the country, which could affect several sitting MPs.

It has been reported that Downing Street officials are "deeply worried" about the investigation, which could trigger by-elections if any seats are declared void.

Some 19 police forces were studying allegations and asked for an extension to the deadline on election offences past year.

Police and the CPS are not naming any MPs or agents who may be under investigation.

The allegations in all the constituencies centre on whether the "battle bus" tour should have been recorded as counting towards individual candidates' spending limits, rather than as part of the larger national spending return.

The allegations, first uncovered by Channel 4 News and the Daily Mirror, relate to spending on campaign battlebuses and hotel bookings for activists that were wrongly recorded as national instead of local spending. The party blames an "administrative error" for failing to register some accommodation costs.

Johansson does a lot of traveling. "The kid was bouncing back and forth". "It will be an interesting process", the attorney added. Johansson made it crystal clear she will not be divulging any details about the proceedings in a statement sent to news outlets.

Some cases have been investigated and concluded with no further action. Mr Quince claims the accusation was "vexatious and politically motivated".

In his statement, Mr Quince acknowledged that once a formal complaint had been made in June 2016, police had a duty to carry out a thorough investigation.

Even the former Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps appeared to acknowledge the matter, stating this weekend: "I remember discovering partway through the campaign, I think, that Timothy was actually down full-time in Thanet".

The Conservative party said it accepted the Electoral Commission findings but attempted to downplay them as a "reporting error" and claimed "political parties of all colours have made reporting mistakes from time to time".

In a leaked email to Sir Patrick, Lincoln MP Karl McCartney complained they felt "completely cast adrift" and had been "left to fend for themselves".

"Lancashire Police interviewed me and they saw fit not to take it any further", he said.

A spokesman said Labour and the Lib Dems had also been fined in the past and "there needs to be a review of how the Electoral Commission's processes and requirements could be clarified or improved".
