Mumps cases at Barrington High School officially an outbreak

The health department says there are 27 possible cases spread throughout Prairie and Station middle schools and Libertyville High School.

Parents have been notified of the possible case of mumps. The mumps diagnosis by the city's Department of Public Health is only preliminary, and CPS says it will work with the department to take whatever precautionary measures it needs to, the report added.

Two more cases of mumps have been diagnosed among students at separate schools in Toronto it was reported Tuesday.

"CPS is supporting the Chicago Department of Public Health as it investigates a potential case of mumps", a statement from CPS said.

Officials grew concerned about the growing number of probable mumps cases in several Barrington schools, saying students who have not been vaccinated should either get the vaccine or stay home until the virus runs its course.

At the time, Shwartz-Maltz said school cleaning staff completed an intense cleaning of the whole school.

Three confirmed cases have been identified at Barrington High School, and a fourth unrelated case has been confirmed in Barrington, but that person has no connection to the school.

Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus, which typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, followed by swollen salivary glands, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

The health department has said the "hallmark" symptoms of mumps are swelling or pain close to the jaw, or on both face sides of the face. Mumps is spread through coughing, sneezing and other contact with saliva.
