Murray River drowning-accused avoids court

Murray River drowning-accused avoids court

At that stage police had not recovered the body of her missing son, which was discovered by divers near the border town of Moama at 11.35am on Saturday.

The body of a five-year-old boy has been found in the Murray River.

The nine-year-old underwent surgery in hospital, and is now in a stable condition.

NSW Police is co-ordinating the search which "will continue until dark tomorrow", while Victoria Police is providing air support and search and rescue teams.

The dead boy's mother, who can not be identified for legal reasons, is facing an attempted murder charge in relation to her other son, who is nine-years-old.

A 27-year-old woman is expected later this morning to face a charge of attempted murder. She was refused bail but will reappear via audiovisual link, at Deniliquin Local Court on Monday.

Further charges are expected to be laid at that time.

It follows police being called to Perricooota Road, Moama, at 7pm on Thursday where a nine-year-old boy was found with serious dog bite injuries.

It is understood the nine-year-old boy sustained several dog bites but it allowed him to escape the water.

Dale Brooks, a lawyer representing the boys' grandmother, told news.com.au the woman was known to local authorities as a long-time methamphetamine addict.

The distraught owner of the dog, named Buddy, told reporters the pit bull was trying to save the boy.

"We've had a brief conversation with the nine-year-old last night and we haven't had another".

The search for the missing 5-year-old boy has resumed.

On his 93rd birthday, Robert Mugabe says of Trump: 'Give him time'
Several incidents in recent years have highlighted his advanced age - including a fall in February 2015 at Harare airport. Mugabe's ZANU-PF party has also been accused of rigging elections and cracking down on political opposition.

In court, witnesses said she told them that she "had to drown my babies".

Thirty searchers are combing the river, with Victorian Police divers and spotter planes also taking part in the search.

It is alleged the mother then held her younger son's head under the water, and later pushed him face-down out into the river, where he was last seen drifting.

Outside court this morning, her lawyer Peter Hebbard said his client was distressed.

The couple had taken out an apprehended violence order against their own daughter in May previous year, which required that she not "assault, molest, harass, threaten or otherwise interfere with" her mother, as well as orders that she should not approach her mother within 24 hours of consuming liquor or illicit drugs.

"They deserved greater protection", Brooks said of the family.

But there's nothing but sympathy for the 27-year-old's mother and stepfather - the grandparents of the child found dead in the river and the other in hospital in Melbourne.

A neighbour outside the court on Saturday, said it was impossible to imagine what the grandmother of the children was going through.

"It's a awful story, it's a sad story, it's a tragic story, not only for the community, the police, especially the family - it's just bad".

"I think it will rock the community of Australia", he said.

Police divers combed the river until 11pm last night, before calling off the search until this morning.

"It is devastating. My police are devastated".
