After Google and Apple, Microsoft Disables Flash Player by Default as Well

Users will also be given more control over Flash content. The latter company has also blocked Flash ads from its Chrome browser. This is the case for sites that still depend on Flash. For those that do, users will be prompted whether they want Flash to run on that site.

The Windows 10 maker has revealed that the next generation of its Microsoft Edge web browser will block Adobe Flash by default.

That was always just going to be the start of things however, as John Hazen, Principal Program Manager Lead, Microsoft Edge, had previously promised "We are planning for and look forward to a future where Flash is no longer necessary as a default experience in Microsoft Edge". Microsoft will allow Flash content to run on some of the most popular sites that still use Flash.

With the Creators Update in 2017, however, Flash will be demoted even further.

This improves security, performance, and battery life according to Microsoft. Which can be read as "we are paying attention to, and monitoring, the websites you visit".

Microsoft plans to roll out the update to Windows Insider preview builds soon, with a stable Windows 10 Creators Update due next year. The tooling and developer familiarity offered by Flash for this richly interactive content is still arguably superior than that on offer to most HTML5 developers, and it's not now clear quite how this gap will be addressed.

As with the user end, the complete phase out of Flash from all the top browsers will finally hand them a better browsing experience with faster load times.

As HTML5 technologies have provided an alternative way for websites to play video and animations, so the need for Flash has diminished.

Web developers have been advised to migrate to standardised content delivery mechanisms such as JavaScript and HTML5 Encrypted Media Extensions, Media Source Extensions, Canvas, Web Audio, and RTC in the coming months.

In yesterday's monthly security patch, Adobe fixed a bug in Flash Player that would have allowed an attacker to hijack permissions granted to other Flash applets and spy on users via their camera or microphone.
