Trump is Time magazine's Person of the Year

Time Magazine on Wednesday named US President-elect Donald Trump as the 2016 Person of the Year which its editor described as a "straightforward" choice. In a brief phone interview with the show, Trump called the title a "very, very great honor".

Though thrilled by the honour now, Trump said he did not like the sub-head - "President of the Divided States of America". "I think putting divided is snarky", he told Lauer.

It's the person who for good or for ill most influenced the world in headlines for that year.

The New York business tycoon stunned the world on November 8th with a surprise win over his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton after political pundits and most opinion polls nearly ruled out his chances to win the White House.

Mr Trump won 306 electoral votes, enough to make him President even though his Democratic rival won the popular vote.

"Next week will be the time I announce it", Trump said.

Clinton, the former secretary of state who became the closest in history to becoming America's first female commander in chief, was named the runner-up, with computer hackers in third place.

"I take his recommendations very seriously", Trump said on taking President Obama's advice. Time also considered the Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan along with singing superstar Beyonce.

As for immigration, Trump again vowed to build his much-discussed wall but indicated that he was still trying to work out who'd be allowed to cross the border and how he'd deal with the children of immigrants.

Trump, meanwhile, announced his first ambassadorial appointment, naming Iowa governor Terry Branstad as USA envoy to China, a position traditionally going to a high-level political appointee with access to the president. We provide our community with the opportunity to share their opinions and vote on topics that matter most to them. "We're going to get the prices down and if we can't get the prices down then we're going to stick with what we have". It will surely be an image we'll all come to remember.
